Serving Up 46 Years of Community Support

Having been in existence since 1924, the Moncton Fish and Game Association is one of the oldest and longest standing hunting and fishing organizations in the Province of New Brunswick. The Association’s annual membership is upwards of 350 including roughly 45 youth.  We take pride in our 95-year history but take greater pride in helping others in the community.

Then and Now

As we plan for our 46th annual MFGA dinner much has changed. No longer is there a big buck contest, woodsman competitions, or displays of taxidermy. Today the focus has shifted towards fundraising to support community projects.

In the post-WW II period, fish and game clubs became very popular in both large and small communities across the country and were heavily involved with conservation efforts working in collaboration with provincial agencies.  Hunting and angling were extremely popular with participant numbers peaking in the early 1970s. Many fish and game clubs held annual dinners for both fundraising and to have opportunities to show off the previous year’s hunting successes.  Many a club held a ‘big buck’ event as part of their annual dinner.

The Mission

We evolved from being just a fish and game club to a registered not-for-profit organization that supports various community projects related to wildlife and the outdoors.  Make no mistake, our members still hunt and fish - but we have found other ways to support our core values of conservation, of protection and of public education.

Can You Help

Our annual dinner is the key to our continuing support. Every year we donate approximately $10,000 to various groups that are active on the ground with conservation and education programs.  Without the dinner, this support would not be possible. We place a premium on projects that are true to our roots.

Over the past 12 years, the MFGA has been able to help a total of 400 local youth attend Camp Centennial.  This is our club’s highest priority and one of its most rewarding projects as we undertake to expose children to learn and appreciate the natural environment.

We have been a long term supporter of the Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance  a local environmental group working to improve fish habitat and environmental quality in the Petitcodiac River Watershed.

Many of our MFGA members are avid trout anglers, with the Kennebecasis River and its tributaries being favourite locales.   In 2017 we started making a donation to the Kennebecasis Watershed Restoration Committee to directly support stream rehabilitation and improvements to trout habitat.

We also support the Atlantic Wildlife Institute  who treat and rehabilitate injured wildlife from all over the province.  They too have education programs involving youth.

In recent years our club took a position to voluntarily reduce the amount of lead in big game hunting because of lead impacts on bald eagles and other raptors.  We are especially proud to support the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Nova Scotia, a center of excellence in treating lead-poisoned eagles.

Conservation and Community involvement is at the core of our DNA. So many groups benefit from the generosity of our attendees. See you at the Dinner.

In addition to the aforementioned, we also support three female members to attend the annual Becoming an Outdoor Woman three-day outdoor camp, are members and financial supporters of the New Brunswick Wildlife Federation as well as the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) and NB Salmon Council.
